Dolly Parton is one of our most beloved entertainment icons. Along with being a prolific singer and songwriter, she is also an actress, businesswoman, author and humanitarian. Born into poverty in 1946, Parton has come a very long way, gaining legions of fans and admirers. Here are top five of the reasons we love Dolly:
1. Dolly has written approximately 5,000 songs
How did she make the time to produce that astounding number of songs? Since the age of seven, she has written a song every two or three days, taking extra time to write on her birthday. Her first song, about a corn-cob doll, had to be copied out by her mother, since she wasn’t able to write yet.
2. She founded the Imagination Library
Growing up without access to books or a library, Dolly wanted to make sure that all children could have books in their home, regardless of income. So she founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1995. The Library became popular and was replicated in many communities across the United States, Canada and even the United Kingdom. Over 60,000,000 books have been mailed to children, improving early childhood literacy for many.
3. She lost a Dolly Parton look-a-like contest
Years ago, Dolly heard about a Halloween Dolly Parton look-a-like contest that was to be held on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles. She entered, over-exaggerating her normal look, thinking she’d be a sure win. But she didn’t win! In fact, according to her, she didn’t even come close.
4. She didn’t make a deal with Elvis
“I Will Always Love You” was a huge hit for Dolly, going to No. 1 on the country music chart. Elvis Presley was interested in covering the song and had his manager approach Dolly about it. After hearing that she would have to sign over half the publishing rights to Presley as part of the deal, Dolly turned him down, a decision that was ultimately worth many millions of dollars over the years, thanks to the song’s enduring popularity.
5. She is the most honored female country performer of all time
Some of the records she has set include 25 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Country charts and 41 career top 10 country albums, in addition to charting 110 singles. She has also won the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year Award, one of only seven women ever to have done so.
