    Ten Unusual Facts about Halloween

    It’s the spookiest time of the year! Enjoy your Halloween festivities with these unusual Halloween facts:

    1. Like dressing up for Halloween? The tradition originated with the Celts, who believed Halloween was a time when spirits could come from the paranormal world to our world and that dressing in masks and costumes during this time would confuse any evil spirits and keep the Celts from harm.

    2. Though Halloween is not generally associated with romance, it’s was actually considered a holiday for lovers in Ireland. Since it was one of the few celebrations a year when young men and women could mingle freely, many couples found love on this scary holiday!

    3. Also from Ireland comes the tradition of jack o’lanterns. Though they were originally carved from turnips with candles placed inside, the pumpkin eventually replaced turnips as the vegetable of choice.

    4. The most popular individual type of Halloween candy is the ubiquitous candy corn. Americans will buy over 20 million pounds of the familiar kernels annually.

    5. Speaking of candy, chocolate is also a popular option, with over 90 million pounds sold in the U.S. during Halloween week.

    6. The world’s longest haunted house is actually a cave. Located in Lewisburg, OH, the Haunted Cave measures 3,564 feet and is located in an abandoned mine 80 feet below surface level.

    7. Halloween traditions date back about 2,000 years. No wonder this holiday goes by many names including: All Hallows Eve, Samhain, All Hallowtide, The Feast of the Dead, All Saints Eve and El Dia de los Muertos.

    8. Though black cats are often associated with Halloween and bad luck in the U.S., in England it’s just the opposite – white cats are considered to be bad luck instead.

    9. Halloween decorations are very popular, with 86% of all Americans decorating their homes each year.

    10. If you like to party, Halloween is your night! It’s the third biggest party day of the year behind New Year’s Eve and Super Bowl Sunday.
